The course will cover the design of a model based control system from scratch, including topics such as system decomposition and partitioning. Variants such as nonlinear MPC, explicit MPC, hybrid MPC, stochastic MPC, distributed MPC among others, will be presented, discussed and analyzed. At the end of the course, several real/simulation applications of MPC on dynamical systems will be also explained, where the main features and drawbacks will be deeply discussed. Some of these applications are water drinking networks, irrigation canals, supply chains, industrial processes, to name a few. Finally, the implementation of this type of controllers in Matlab will be covered as well, and the attendants will have the chance to develop their own library of functions for their future professional practice.

Course Content:

Course Outcomes:
This course aims at presenting the most relevant tools and techniques related to the synthesis and implementation of model predictive control (MPC) strategies on dynamical systems of any nature.

Carlos Ocampo Martínez was born in Manizales (Colombia) on August 30, 1978. He received his Electronics Engineering degree and MSc. degree in Industrial Automation from the National University of Colombia, Campus Manizales in 2001 and 2003, respectively. In 2007, He received a Ph.D. degree in Control Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia - BarcelonaTech (Barcelona, Spain). Since 2011, He is with the Technical University of Catalunya, Automatic Control Department (ESAII), currently as Associate Professor in automatic control and model predictive control. Since 2014, He is also Deputy Director of the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial,  CSIC-UPC, a Joint Research Center of UPC and CSIC.
 
José María Maestre Torreblanca hold a PhD on automation and robotics by the University of Seville, where he works as associate professor. He has also worked in LTH at Lund University (guest researcher), TU Delft (postdoc) and University of Cadiz (assistant professor). Besides his PhD, which was awarded with the extraordinary prize of the University of Seville, he has a master degree on smart homes and intelligent buildings by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a master on telecommunications economics by the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. His main research interests are the control of distributed systems and the integration of service robots in the smart home. He has authored and coauthored more than sixty conference and journal papers regarding these topics, and he is one of the editors of the books “Service robotics within the Digital Home: Applications and Future Prospects” and “Distributed Model Predictive Control Made Easy” published by Springer. Finally, he is one of the founders of the technological firms Idener and Alacarta Tecnologías Integradas.
